Institution Research

Institution Research


Institution Companies or corporations sell products to make as much profit as they can. Institution companies or corporations sell anything, but for this blog I will be looking at my magazine institution companies. In total there are around 2,471 consumer magazines in production in the UK and  includes a revenue value of around £1.4billion.

Magazine publishing institutions are constantly diversifying using an array of platforms such as:
Tablet
Mobiles
Social media
Online
Live events
The reason magazine institutions are starting to use new media technologies like tablet is because paper magazines are becoming less popular, for example, the Dandy first published 75 years ago has now stopped producing paper copies and  is now producing comics for tablets. The reason the Dandy did this is to satisfy the need of the customer as people no longer buy comics in the shop as its done all electronically. Using a example in the 1950s the dandy had a circulation figure of two million copies but because of new media technology the Dandy's circulation figures plummeted down to about 8,000 copies a week.

IPC media
IPC media is the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher; it reaches a audiences of 26 million UK adults. This equals to two-thirds of women and around 42% of men. IPC has three different publishing divisions IPC CONNECT, IPC INSPIRE and IPV SOUTHBANK.

IPC Connect
IPC Connect is IPC Media's mass-market women's division which includes a range of brands that provide powerful  consumer reach. The Connects magazines are read by around 9.4 million mass-market women, this equals 49% of all mass-market women. There are also 35 million delivered page impressions every month and the digital brand reaches over 5.3 million people.


Some of the IPC connect magazine brands are Now and Chat As you can see "Now" is more of high end product and "Chat" is aimed at a lower class audiences.

IPC Inspire
IPC Inspire is IPC's men division. Its portfolio of 38 brands covers a big range of interests like country, shooting, marine, sport, music and much more.

IPC Southbank

IPC Southbank is the upmarket division of IPC aimed at women. It focuses on stereotypical things that females like for example fashion, women's lifestyle and Home Interests. IPC inspire aims at a high social class of A and B for this reason they target a niche market. As IPC already do a range of women magazines which look at some of the same topics as  would be in my magazine it would not benefit myself or IPC if I went with IPC. 

BBC

The BBC has a range of magazines that target a range of audiences for example the BBC makes the magazine Top of the Pops (which I have looked at in past blog posts) a music based magazine. The BBC also publishes magazines for history, sport, cars, wildlife, cooking, traveling, gardening, weddings and many more. The BBC sells so many different magazines they have a magazine for nearly every age range and social class. Because of this large range of magazines this makes the BBC  the UK's third  largest magazine publisher. They also have over one million subscribers and including the over types of magazines stated the BBC has 58 different magazines. The BBC has sold around 70 million magazines each year. As the BBC already produces a pop magazine Top of the Pops it would be a silly idea to publish though them as they are my competition.

 

Bauer Media

Bauer media is a multinational media company which is based in Germany. Bauer sell 38 million magazines each week around the world and they have over 300 magazines which reach 15 different countries including the UK.Bauer also provide television channels including Q, Kerrang, Heat, Music, Kiss, Magic, Q and Box television. Bauer has a range of magazines that include Empire, FHM, Heat, Golf World, Car, Kerrang, Q, Zoo, Trail, Sea Angler, Bauer also provide online and mobile services. As Bauer is such a big company with reflection they do not offer a magazine that is aimed at my target audience, it would be realistic and a good idea for me to publish though Bauer. I believe this would also benefit Bauer as much as myself as it would give Bauer the chance to sell a product to new audiences and in turn make more profit.
