Shutters Island: double page analysis

This is a double page spread about Shutter Island however unlike the other double page spreads I have looked at this double page spread also has a section on the right hand side of it where it talks about some other films, which seems very unusual and not really a convention I have seen before.

The majority of the double page spread is taken up by a wide angle shot where you have the two main characters in a very dark location. The reason you know it is dark is because of the use of the torches in the image that the characters are holding. Overall this image gives a sense of suspense because of the mise-en-scene makes you wonder what the characters are doing and they look nervous which makes the atmosphere scary. The use of the torch in the photo also links in with trying to create a scary atmosphere as these are a convention of horror films but this is a bit confusing as this film is more of a
psychological thriller than a horror.

In terms of layout, after the main image you also have two other images which are medium shots from other films down in the right column. You then have about one third of the page taken up with text while the remaining space is white. The article is in columns under the main image and this layout is different to the other ones I have seen because the main image is above the text not on the opposite page.

The colour pallet is; white, black, blue and red, the same colours that are on the poster for this film which shows the genre. But on this double page spread they fit film magazine conventions as some colours are used more than others. For example black is used for about 95% of the text, meaning you then have about 3% of the text consisting of blue and red which is used to highlight key feature of text. I particularly like how they have used red and blue to highlight key features because this just makes you more drawn to that section, for example if you were just flicking though the magazine and you came across this page you would straight away be drawn to the blue and red sections as they are just bolder and stand out against the black and white. This could be a nice idea to bear in mind for my feature article because it would be good to make the key feature of the article stand out to the audiences.

Red: short film analysis

Red is a psychological thriller short film about a group of people that wake up in a room with no idea where they are and have no idea why they are there. The film lasts for just under 8 years and stars five people, two females and three males.

The use of mise-en-scene in the short film is very simple as everyone is wearing casual modern cloths that include jeans and a white T-shirt apart from one of the guys who is wearing a red t-shirt which makes you think you should watch him more closely for some reason as red becomes your focus point.  They also use objects such as a clock as a prop to add tension and suspense to the film. Overall, I would consider their mise-en-scene choices interesting as they add a lot of tension which builds throughout the film.

The short film also uses a wide range of different camera shots and different camera techniques. For example, from the start of the film until around 34 seconds into it you have this long take
which really makes you feel you are in the room for a long time with the characters. Next, a series of over the shoulder shots and pans make you feel part of the film before some high a low angle shots makes you feel like an observer again. High and low angle shots are also used to show who is weak and dominant at different points in the film. Cut aways of the ticking clock also create a lot of tension.
Throughout the short film the camera work is well thought out and I think it adds to the pressure and suspense.

Moving onto sound, the dialogue that is used in the short film is really good because it helps establish the setting it also helps develop the character though the short time of the film. Sound effects like the ticking clock also add tension. One thing I will say about the dialogue is that is could have been delivered better at times to get emotions over but this is because the actors are quite amateur and they did do well most of the time to get their points across. However in some parts of the film it seemed as if they just weren't there and by this I mean it seemed that they were playing a completely different character. When we cast and start filming we will have to keep an eye on the performance of our actors.

In conclusion I believe this film is a primary example of how you can make a short film on a low budget and that sound is very important because if the dialogue is not right the story won;t come across. In this film the diegetic clock sound and the prop of the clock was very important because it showed
how time was running out for the people inside the room. The clock also added a sense of drama to the scene that would have been missing if there had been no clock.

Spider-Man: double page analysis

This double page spread is about the film Spider-man 2, a superhero film which has a target audience of males 12+ and a secondary target audience of families and comic book fans.

Although you can clearly see this is targeted at a younger age group than the Clash of the Titians double page spread because brighter colours, white, blue and red, have been used and an image of a comic book hero there is a lot of text about this film which shows the target audience of the article may be older comic book fans who like reading more than younger males would.

The layout is similar to the other double spread I looked at as there is a big medium action shot filling over half the spread showing the main character and setting. I like the layout of this and I like the colour scheme because it matches the image and Spiderman. The typography also matches the film. There is no space wasted on this double page spread because the title is large, below it is the main article and down the bottom there is film fact boxes and box office trends in a graph.

I like this double page because there is not wasted space and because the image is dramatic and makes the target audience stop and notice the feature.

Clash of the Titians: double page analysis

The first film double page I am going to look at is one for the film Clash of the Titians a film with a target audience of males 12+. I also think they have targeted this double page spread to the same age group because of how they have used colours, images and text. The text does not take up too much of the page which represents males who don't like reading a lot most of the spread is taken up with a big title and images; a medium shot of a main character on the left and another shot from the film - a medium close up overlapping the image and text.

The images show that the film will have characters that are aggressive and violent, the text also shows the the narrative will be about dramatic fights because it says; “God and Monsters.”.I like the style of typography they used for this text because they have used a very roman style font which relates to the Gods aspect of the film and makes you think of old gladiator fighting. There is also more text above the title and also underneath however compared to other double page spreads I have seen this double page spread does not include that much text.

What I practically like about the double page is the colour scheme which is; grey, black, white and gold. I like how they have used the gold to make key parts of text standout such as the title and select parts of the text below in the main article.  I also like how white has been used to make a white boarder around the second image on the double page spread to make it stand out more. The grey and black works to show the audience this is a male film. The white background behind the text has been made to look faded like old paper which is more visually appealing and links to the setting of the film.

Another part I like is the image they have used underneath the second page which adds to the whole Greek feel of the double page spread. This also makes the empty space up the top more interesting because the photo/ texture is more dominate in the top section of the double page spread. Although looking over the whole double page spread there is one main problem I have, which is,  there is such a big empty space in the top section of the second page which could have been used to include more images such as like the one with the border which is a medium long shot or the main image which is a long shot, the reason I think they should have filled this space is because I think it’s a wasted chance because they have left such a big space.

Script second draft

Here is the sceond draft of the script where some corrections have been made and also numbers have been added as each number relates to one of the shots on the shots list.

EXT. A STREET- NIGHT

1-1The street feels dark, empty, solemn. There appears to be no one around, only the flickering of street lights can be seen.

And then the sound of an unsettling, females, scream and many, male, grunts coming following it.

1-2,1-3We move to see EDWARD STEVENSON brutally beating his girlfriend, SARAH FITZWARIN with a large rock.
1-4The image of the rock flashes quickly to the image of an apple being held in the air. The apple of Eden.
1-5,1-6 Blood already covers his face, clothes, and, particularly, his hands.

EXT. OPEN FIELD-DAY
1-7,1-8We see an almost identical scene, a short brief one of the first murder. CAIN is standing over ABEL, hitting him with a rock.

TITLES
EXT. A STREET- NIGHT
2-1There is a ringing phone, heard coming from EDWARD’s pocket. He stops beating SARAH and takes out the phone.

2-2He answers it.
2-3
EDWARD
Hello?

SARAH (V.O)
Hello.

EDWARD
Who is this?

SARAH (V.O)
Sarah. Sarah FitzWarin.

2-4EDWARD looks down to the bloody body, before standing and walking away.
2-5
2-6EDWARD
Sarah?

SARAH (V.O)
Yes. Who is this?

EDWARD
Who am I? Ed…

SARAH (V.O)
Is this Peter, Peter Deluca?

EDWARD thinks for a moment. It feels silent and peaceful.

EDWARD
Yes. My name is Peter Deluca.

SARAH (V.O)
Can you still hear me?

2-7EDWARD looks at his phone.

EDWARD
Hello?

2-8After no reply, EDWARD puts his phone in his pocket.

2-9He looks back over to the body.

He walks over to it and, with no emotion he sits beside it.

EDWARD (V.O)
My name is Edward Stevenson. And I murdered my girlfriend.

EXT. A STREET- EARLIER

3-1There is an empty street, more of a back street behind some houses.

EDWARD (V.O)
But it was not I who wanted her dead. But… I could see the reasoning.

We turn to see EDWARD sitting alone on a wall, looking down to the pavement as he drinks from a can.

3-2Another male walks up to him, he is of the same age. This is HUGO.

HUGO
Good morning Peter.

EDWARD (V.O)
Edward.

EDWARD
Morning Hugo.

3-3HUGO
Sarah.

3-4EDWARD
What about her?

3-5HUGO
She’s changing you, Peter.

EDWARD (V.O)
Edward…

HUGO
I know you love her. But don’t you also love me?

3-6EDWARD
Hugo. I do love you. But…

HUGO
What? What is it?

3-7EDWARD
There’s something about Sarah. I don’t know what it is.

3-8HUGO
No! You must know exactly what it is. You love me. You have always loved me!

3-9EDWARD
But I desire Sarah.

3-10HUGO
No, Peter. No.

3-12EDWARD
We cannot be together anymore Hugo. It is not supposed to even be.

3-13HUGO
You must kill her.

3-14EDWARD
You want me to kill Sarah?

3-15HUGO places his hand upon EDWARD’s shoulder.

HUGO
Yes. She is corrupting your mind...Edward…She is changing you into a bad person. She wants to control you. To take us from each other.

EDWARD (V.O)
She’ll take us from each other.

EXT. A STREET-NIGHT

4-1EDWARD is standing over the body of SARAH. He is holding his phone down to his side.

EDWARD crouches beside the body, 4-2taking hold of SARAH’s bloody hand.

4-3EDWARD
Must you have died so soon? Must I have been the one to find you here lifeless?

4-4A hand comes down upon EDWARD’s shoulder.

SARAH (O.S)
Death is pre-decided.

4-5EDWARD looks up to see SARAH standing over him. She is wearing a white dress.

4-6EDWARD quickly stands, terrified, and he shuffles away.

EDWARD
No. No! You do not speak to me. You are dead!

4-7SARAH
I don’t feel dead, Edward.

4-8EDWARD
But I see your body by my feet.

4-9SARAH
I see no body, Peter.

EDWARD looks back over to the body. There is nothing there. No body, no blood. Absolutely no sign of a murder at all.

4-10EDWARD
I watched you die. I felt you die.

4-11SARAH takes hold of EDWARD’s hand and pulls him slightly.

4-12SARAH
Come with me.

They walk off together. Hand in hand.

EXT. AN OLD HOME-DAY

5-1It is dream like. Almost heavenly. Though it is also empty.

SARAH (V.O)
Come home with me.

5-2EDWARD and SARAH walk towards the building, still hand in hand.

5-3EDWARD
Where are we?

SARAH
Welcome home Peter.

EDWARD
This is not my home.

5-4SARAH
No. Not your home, Peter. This is our home.

EXT. A STREET-DAY

6-1EDWARD is sat on the ground, his head in his hands.

HUGO walks up and sits beside him.

HUGO
Have you done it yet? Have you killed her?

6-2EDWARD
I can’t kill her Hugo. I can’t.

6-3HUGO
Do you not listen to me? Do you not care for me anymore?

6-4EDWARD
No! No I don’t.

6-5HUGO quickly stands and grabs hold of EDWARD, 6-6pulling him up.

6-7HUGO throws EDWARD to the ground.

6-8EDWARD quickly reaches for a rock and 6-9starts to hit HUGO.6-10

6-11HUGO falls to the ground, dead, as 6-12EDWARD stands over him. A scene almost identical to EDWARD’s murder of SARAH.

EXT. A FIELD-DAY

7-1CAIN drops the rock beside the body of ABEL, he is breathing heavily.

The apple sits beside ABEL, stained by blood.

EDWARD (V.O)
Pain. Passion. Anger. Deceit. We are all humans. We do as we desire. We love as we choose. We control our world. No one else.

FADE TO WHITE

EXT. OLD HOME-DAY

7-1EDWARD is walking alone towards the old house.

EDWARD (V.O)
My name is Peter Deluca. And I murdered my boyfriend.

He walks away into a light.

Film Poster Analysis: Before I Go To Sleep

In this blog post I will be looking at the film poster for the film Before I go to Sleep, a psychological thriller which was released in 2014. The target audiences of the film was 15+ males and females who liked this genre.

When looking at this poster the first thing you notice is the main image which is made up of three different close up pictures of the main stars of the film, Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong. The close ups let you see the emotion and all the characters look very serious. When making my own poster I will need to think if I want to use close ups like this to show emotions of if I will want to use medium or long shots to create more mystery.

Moving onto the colour pallet, it is very simple because just uses black and white and the colours in the image, this is in keeping with the conventions of psychological thrillers because it makes the film look serious and believable. I think I will be needing to using a black and white colour scheme for my poster to follow this convention.

The final part of the poster I am going to look at is the typography style of the poster, the typography style is very serious and simple which shows the film will be intense. The slogan 'Remember who to trust' foes over the images in the centre of the page and this gives you some insight into the story.
You then have the rest of the text at the bottom section of the page, and this includes the standard text you would expect to see, the film title, release date and credits. The actors names are at the top of the poster on this one. I will follow these sort of text conventions on my poster.

From looking at this poster I have now learned that the key features I need to think about on my own poster will be; images, layout, typography and colour pallet.
